Recovery at Steve's Ranch
15 August 2010 as told by Steve Kernot

The day went well with no rain but damp underfoot.  We had a good turnout and hopefully we didn’t turn anybody off with what could happen if we don’t think about what we are doing.

Dennis and Andy started us off with showing us the gear required and the maintenance of that gear so that it remains usable and safe.  We were shown the differences in shackles, strops, ropes and tree protectors.  We learned how to connect rope eyes together (so we can get them undone) and how to connect them to the vehicles correctly.

The instructors showed us hand signals, where to stand, where not to stand (and Why) and the importance in one person in charge, giving the instructions in view of both drivers. Andy went over winching, types of winches, and the hazards of wire rope.

After the instruction we didn’t take long to find places to put our lessons into practice.

As a club, safety impacts on all of us so we need to be aware of the dangers and how to manage them.  We are lucky that we have experienced members who are willing to share their knowledge. This was a very worth while day thanks Andy and Dennis for your instruction.
